Shiso leaf

Shiso leaf (紫蘇) is the leaf of the wild sesame plant (Perilla frutescens). Its uses in the Japanese cuisine range from colouring fermented plum (umeboshi), adding a citrus-like touch to soy sauce, or simply holding a rice ball together. In the Aichi prefecture it’s added to the furikake, a popular sesame and dried fish sprinkle. That’s also where the most prized variety comes from and is the one we prefer to use at Lukowitz.
